In the short episode with John Oliver, student debt and smaller colleges are discussed. Oliver uses ethos, pathos, and logos in his arguments. Pathos is defined as persuading with the use of emotions. Oliver talks about a particular college commercial with a father talking about his success at the school and how it helped him achieve his “perfect” life. The ad shows the man with his two sons and his nice home and even shows the man cleaning his boat. The man talks about how his degree was really important so he could provide for his sons. The viewer feels happy for the man and can even feel hopeful for a successful future like his. However, Oliver is quick to tear the emotional ad apart by talking about the true stats of graduates from the particular college. He provides facts to show that it may not be logical to attend the college because it was very rare for its graduates to thrive in the future. Since Oliver uses logic to defend his point, he is using logos. Lastly, ethos is used in the clip as well. Ethos is defined as using trust to persuade people one way or another. Higher officials and professional are shown giving their input on the problems. Since they have important titles, the viewer is more likely to trust the information they provide.
